Advise for new moms and dads

Being a parent is the hardest, yet the most important and rewarding job you will ever do. The first few weeks of your new baby's life are very exciting, but can also be very hectic and stressful. Below is a list of tips on how to survive these first few weeks of being a new parent.

  • Get as much rest as possible - sleep when the baby sleeps. Take turns sleeping late on the weekends.
  • Eat nutritious meals. If family or friends are volunteering their help, ask them to provide a meal or do your grocery shopping.
  • Don't expect too much from yourself - after all, you are learning a whole new role. Your life might seem hectic at first, but you will eventually get back to a routine.
  • Call your doctor with questions or concerns you may have. This will help save you from needless worry.
  • Protect your privacy and time together as a new family. Visitors can be helpful but you may want to consider setting time limits.
  • Dads - spend lots of time caring for and playing with the baby - this is an important and precious bonding time. Besides, Moms could probably use the break!
  • If you find yourself getting frustrated and angry with your baby, call for help. Ask a family member, friend or neighbor to take care of the baby while you take a break.
